The aim of this paper is to highlight the link between the development of the transport system and the trust that citizens place in institutions' initiatives. A theoretical model has been specified according to which perceived power and knowledge of the transportation system influence the perceived benefits of local policies as well as the awareness of the relative costs. Such aspects, on their turn, influence and are linked to trust both in the local transport and in the local policy, in general. Model estimation has been carried out using the results of a survey conducted in the metropolitan area of Naples (south Italy) performing a structural equation model with partial least square‐path modeling estimation.
