The narrative games we play: Varied use of narrative strategies across genres and socioeconomic positions

Abstract Given that narratives are social products in function of the audience, genre of writing, purpose, and social histories and social memberships of the people who create them (Labov, 2006 [1966]), this study explores the role context plays in understanding and producing language and narrative. Specifically, I focus on the impact that genre and social history have on sense-making with the aim of demonstrating the contextual (as opposed to inherent and stable) nature of psychological functions. Adolescents from contrasting socioeconomic backgrounds around New York City were instructed to retell a story centered around injustice from the perspectives of the self, object, and subject of injustice, using different genres of writing, addressed at different audiences. I will demonstrate the shifts in narrative strategies used as a function of the writing genre, as well as how these shifts vary across two differently privileged socioeconomic groups.
