How should a flying insect in search of a place to feed or oviposit choose to land on a plant? Many phytophagous insects use chemical cues to identify their host plants.Wolfin and colleagues studied the host location behavior of the grape berry moth, Paralobesia viteana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) using a synthetic model in a flight tunnel. Only the combination of visual stimuli, odor stimuli, and humidity elicited landing rates comparable to live grape shoots. These results indicate that chemical cues are not sufficient for locating a host plant and that additional stimuli are used by the insect in the field. Such knowledge will be useful when developing control methods against this grape pest.
