The Paleoprotherozoic Volcanics of the Tim Formation within the Kursk Block, Sarmatia: Age and Geodynamic Setting

The volcanic–terrigenous Tim Formation in the Kursk Block of Sarmatia occurs in the Paleoproterozoic synforms. The Tim Formation volcanics are represented by metamorphosed ferropicrites, ferropicritic basalts, basalts, and andesibasalts. According to the U–Pb dating of zircon, their possible age is 2099 ± 8 Ma. Thus, the Tim Formation deposits were separated by a long hiatus from the terrigenous–chemogenic strata of the Kursk Group (~2.6–2.4 Ga). Basaltic magmatism is caused by upwelling of melts from the asthenospheric mantle in the slab-window of the subducted oceanic plate during accretion–collisional interaction between the Kursk domain and the Volga–Don orogen.
