ABSTRACT

This article draws on translation theory to show how the collective selfhood of followers of football in Northern Ireland, rooted in national and political identity, is expressed. Building on the work of Judith Butler on gender and hate speech, complemented by insights from translation theorists, it demonstrates how we might view this activity as translational by considering it as a performance of identity. The performative turn in translation studies has marked a shift from analyses of the written and spoken word to the presence of performative processes in a range of practices. Consequently, this article permits a new outlook on how notions of identity are expressed by supporters in club and international football in Northern Ireland and the significance of the places in which this process is enacted, while its interdisciplinary nature highlights the relevance of applying translation theory across other disciplines.
