office. Therefore, I would have liked to read more about both the former and current mayors and their agendas. For example, current Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been criticized for focusing too much on the downtown business district and not enough on the neighborhoods. Both Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot and the Illinois House of Representatives support legislation to replace the appointed school board with an elected board. It will be interesting to see if this changes any of the politics that are so closely linked to CPS (Petrella 2019). Including more explanation that the South Side’s schools weren’t the only institutions being affected would have strengthened Ewing’s argument. On the whole, this text offers a thorough summary of how disadvantaged, minority communities see schools as neighborhood institutions and why there is public uproar when schools are slated to close. While it did leave me wanting to know more about charter schools and politics surrounding these closures, faculty could certainly assign additional readings to make up for this. The range of methodologies and perspectives covered in this book makes it useful and informative. Ewing’s use of interviews showed the strength and resiliency of the community, which is often overlooked in the larger conversation about race and inequality. Including the Bronzeville residents’ stories conveys their strong sense of pride in their community. Additionally, I appreciated that Ewing not only tackled current events but also provided historical context about Bronzeville and the discrimination that generations of its residents faced and still face. Lastly, Ewing’s writing style is easy to read and therefore will appeal to a broad range of students. Based on all of this, I highly recommend incorporating Ghosts in the Schoolyard into graduate and undergraduate sociology courses.

Both Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot and the Illinois House of Representatives support legislation to replace the appointed school board with an elected board.
