This paper examines how segmental strategies of the baby-talk register in Korean, Aegyo, are used and evaluated through usage frequency analysis on Twitter and a cuteness rating experiment. The experimental results show that Korean speakers recognize different expressive strengths of segmental strategies of the Aegyo register and that the phonotactic naturalness of sound sequences as the outputs of segmental Aegyo strategies is a critical factor in evaluating the degree of cuteness of Aegyo expressions. The Aegyo variants involving sequences of an affricate and the following palatal glide that are natural on the phonotactic grounds in Korean got the highest cuteness scores. The pattern of usage frequencies on Twitter shows a positive correlation with the rating results. Since the function of the Aegyo register is to sound cute and young, we examine the gender and age effects in evaluating cuteness of Aegyo variants. The results of rating experiments also show that female and older speakers (the main users of Aegyo) are more sensitive to relative differences in expressive strengths between different segmental compared to male and younger speakers. Considering that use of Aegyo register is to set up a childlike persona of addressers to be taken care of by addressees in an intimate relationship, the gender and age effects could be understood as the motivated attention: female and older speakers have greater caretaking motivations.
