Validation of the SIEVEA instrument using the Rasch analysis

This article describes the validation of the Science Identities, Expectations of Success in Science, Values of Science, and Environmental Attitudes (SIEVEA) instrument using Rasch analysis. SIEVEA is an online survey that can be used to measure students’ science identities, expectations of success in science, values of science, and environmental attitudes. The instrument was previously validated through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. During the current study, 3454 high school students from 13 urban, suburban, and private schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut took SIEVEA. The collected data was analyzed using Rasch analysis. The results of the analysis once again confirmed the instrument’s reliability and validity. The SIEVEA instrument is a valuable tool, which allows for measurement of important constructs related to successful science learning.
