Using patent data from 1976 to 2010 as indicators of inventive activity, we determine the concentration level of where inventive ideas originate and then examine how and why those concentrations change over time. The analysis finds pervasive deconcentration in every area related to the Information and Communication Technology equipment market. We find that booms and busts play an important role in deconcentration trends. In comparison, new entry explains surprisingly little, and merger and acquisition activity does not revert the trend. We thank Colleen Mallahan for research assistance. We also thank Tim Bresnahan, Bronwyn Hall, Ben Jones, Scott Stern, anonymous reviewers, and seminar participants for comments. We thank Kate Adams and Alicia Shems for editorial assistance. We also thank the Dean’s Office and the GM Strategy Research Center of the Kellogg School of Management for funding. We are responsible for all errors. We note that this paper was originally part of an earlier paper, “The (de)Concentration of Sources of Inventive Ideas: Evidence from ICT Equipment,” it was split into two parts. Several passages, sentences, and some tables in the Appendix have been published in a similar format in an unrefereed Loyola University Law Conference proceeding under the title “Composition of Innovative Activity in ICT Equipment R&D.” This paper, the second part of the original, however, has a novel thesis and conclusion and is the sole work of the authors.
