Margaret Meek Spencer’s death at the age of 95 may give readers pause for thought. Most of us are engaged in the fields to which she contributed over seven decades: literacy, policy, children’s literature, teachers’ professional learning and their initial education. She resisted the term “training” in relation to teachers and in 1990 she wrote to one of her many former students to remind him of this when he became Chief Inspector at Ofsted, Margaret Meek Spencer at the London Institute of Education, 1988.
