Abstract In Sri Lanka, Muslim law is administered in lay tribunals known as Quazi courts. This article queries whether these courts are justified as useful non-judicial tribunals and if so in what ways they can be improved. It concludes that access to speedy and inexpensive justice being a priority, there is no case to abolish the system of Quazi courts. It promotes infrastructural reforms of the Quazi court system and argues the importance of modernizing some aspects of Muslim law which are seen to tolerate inequality and unfairness
