In 1921 Richard von Mises founded the „Zeitschrift für Mathematik und Mechanik“ – Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (ZAMM) and the „Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik“ – International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM). Richard von Mises' mission statement of breaking down the boundaries between pure mathematics and the application of mathematical theories, especially in the engineering sciences, was and is of great importance for our scientific discipline. For the 100th anniversary of ZAMM, the opportunity was taken to place a series of selected publications, which consider the developments since the initiation of the journal. The first paper in this series „The joy that engineers and mathematicians have come together. Richard von Mises’ foundation of ZAMM, and its Tasks and Goals (1920/21)“ by Reinhard Siegmund‐Schultze (Kristiansand, Norway) highlights the beginning of the ZAMM.

reflects 25 years of ZAMM's history from the former managing editors perspective. It allows insights behind the scenes, especially during the years before German reunification, which are hardly tangible or understandable from today's perspective.
