Opportunities for the valorization of industrial glycerol via biotransformations

Industrial biotechnology faces the challenge of providing significant economic advantages using sustainable processes either to establish new processes, to displace established processes or valorize industrial waste. Crude glycerol obtained as a by-product of biodiesel production has very low market value but can be valorized via microbial bioconversions. This work revises efforts made by the scientific community to optimize the crude glycerol microbial biotransformation into dihydroxyacetone, one of the most valuable compounds obtained from this feedstock. Attention to the many aspects of process optimization to increase productivity has been addressed that are also transversal to other glycerol biotransformations to obtain improved yields.
