Oil leaking and seeping site in the Persian Gulf detected and studied by satellite observations

Abstract

During remote monitoring of the Persian Gulf to detect oil spills, conducted from 2017 to 2019, leaking oil on the sea surface was observed at an offshore site. The site was located 26 km west of the Sir Abu Nuyar Island in the waters of the United Arab Emirates. A more detailed analysis was conducted using remote sensing data, particularly synthetic aperture radar and optical images from the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites. Geographic information systems and additional cartographic, geological, and industrial data collected from several sources allowed us to conclude that, in the subject area, there was one abandoned leaking oil well, and two natural oil seeps. Using generally accepted methods, estimates of oil discharges at the site were estimated at 5–21 tons per day. Our evidence showed that the leaking and seeping oil sources in this area were both active and repeating, even prolific. The site was considered one of the largest active cases among such sites in the Persian Gulf. It is concluded modern remote sensing methods are the most effective means of observing such phenomena formed on the sea surface.
