Comparison of Moringa oleifera oils extracted with supercritical fluids and hexane and characterization of seed storage proteins in defatted flour

The aim of this work was to compare the yield and fatty acids profile of Moringa oleifera oils obtained with supercritical fluids extraction (SFE) and solvent extraction. Seed proteins from residual defatted flour were characterized according to the Osborne's fractionation and by shotgun proteomics in gel approach. SFE showed higher yield (35%) than solvent extraction method (20%). Fatty acids profile were similar being oleic acid the compound of the highest abundance followed by myristic, palmitic, stearic, and behenic acids. A unique profile of seed storage proteins (SSPs) was observed. 2S albumins, chitin binding protein-2, morintide, protein disulfure-isomerases, and proteins related with photorespiration were identified. Present results showed that SFE is an efficient green method to obtain high oil yields from Moringa seeds. Moringa SSPs profile has been characterized for the first time, which gives a whole panorama of protein seed composition and its solubility properties.
