My tenure as Chair of the LR&T Editorial Board has coincided with several changes. The number and size of the issues within each LR&T volume has increased and more importantly the quality of the content, as assessed by the Impact Factor, has also increased to well above the critical value of 2. This is due to the authors of papers, but also the work of the LR&T Board, the previous Editor in Chief, Peter Boyce, the new Editor in Chief, Steve Fotios and the previous Chair of the Editorial Board, David Carter. With the growing contribution of seven new Associate Editors, there is now a real opportunity to move the Journal forward under the new Chair, Teresa Goodman, who begins her tenure in November 2020. In addition to publishing research output, there is also a vital need to facilitate interaction with the leading researchers across the light and lighting landscape. The LR&T Symposia are designed to do this and these bi-annual events are now an established part of the LR&T, SLL and international research event calendar. The output of these symposia, together with specially commissioned issues, will only add to the relevance and impact of LR&T. It is suggested that sustainability is at the top of most national research agendas, and there are plenty of sustainability topics around light and lighting left to explore. The Bruntland Report of 1987 is commonly cited as the first initiative to establish sustainable development through the three main pillars of economic growth, environmental protection and social equality. Internationally, economic growth is generally given priority over the other two pillars. An important part of the social equality pillar is the provision of inclusive environments. In particular for those engaged in light and lighting research, there is a need to address the requirements of people who have a visual impairment or are blind. Whilst several helpful and research evidence-based lighting guidance documents are available, there are many underlying research questions that need to be addressed. One is the impact of the wide range of eye pathologies on the perception of colour and contrast. In particular, there is very little work on the validity of the spectral response; from the standard blue, green and red light sources; of the three retinal cone types that are sensitive to short, medium and long wavelength light. In simplistic terms, only the retinal cone response of those with good vision form the basis of the widely accepted models for the perception of colour and contrast. However, it seems reasonable to assume that those with eye pathologies, e.g. macular degeneration, do not have the same cone spectral responses as those who have good vision. These cone response differences need to be examined so that an accurate assessment of colour and contrast perception can be determined. This can then be used to provide the sustainable and inclusive environments that we all need.
