Parameters controlling cyclic behaviour of cement-treated sand

The present work aims to study a cement-treated sand through resilient modulus (RM) and fatigue life (Nf) tests. The use of the porosity/cement index (η/Civ) for the assessment of mixtures cyclic response was investigated for the first time. A uniform fine clean sand was cement-treated with varying amounts of Portland cement content (from 1% to 9%) and compacted with different voids ratios (0.64, 0.70 and 0.78). Increasing porosity or reducing Portland cement content led to RM and Nf reduction. The porosity/cement index (η/Civ) showed to be suitable to predict the cyclic behaviour of a cement-treated sand considering varying Portland cement contents and dry densities. For the studied sand matrix–Portland cement blend Nf/RM fits η/Civ according to a power function, revealing a consistent pattern of dependence between these geomechanical properties and that index. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) performed on the results of a factorial experiment considering the effect of porosity and cement content showed both factors are significant in affecting the measured values of the investigated characteristics. By using the η/Civ, practitioners may choose the amount of cement and the target density appropriate to provide a mixture that meets the fatigue life and average resilient modulus required by their project.
