Monometallic Copper Catalysts for the Hydrogenation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Abstract

A catalytic system 3%Cu/CeO2–ZrO2 has been developed that allows the selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan with conversion of 70% and selectivity of 100% in 2 h at 170°C and hydrogen pressure of 10 atm. During the work, the effect of the amount of copper in the catalyst, its phase composition as well as the technique of copper deposition on the activity of the obtained samples was studied.
