Vertical vibration analysis of a coupled vehicle-container model of a high-speed freight EMU

The high-speed freight trains are increasingly using containers for efficient cargo handling and improved transportation economy. The dynamic interactions of the containers with the vehicle can cause greater vehicle vibration, especially at speeds as high as 350 km/h. This study investigates the vibration response of a high-speed freight car (electric motor unit, EMU) through development and analysis of a coupled container-vehicle multibody dynamics (MBD) model in the SIMPACK platform. The flexible carbody is established in the ANSYS software. An integrated MBD model which ignore the viscoelastic coupling between the containers and the carbody and a MBD model of the vehicle without the containers are established as the reference models. The viscoelastic parameters study of the cargo mounting system and the vertical vibration responses of the carbody, containers and the bogies under different operating speeds and different container loads are analysed. The simulation results are discussed to provide design guidance for the containers’ mounts. The results suggested that the vertical vibration response of the coupled system is strongly affected by the viscoelastic properties of the mounting system. Stiffer container mounts revealed dominant vibration responses of the containers in the vicinity of the modal frequencies of the carbody.
