Assessment of impact of cyclone hazard on social vulnerability of Bhadrak District of Odisha State during Phailin Cyclone in 2013 and Titli Cyclone in 2018 using multi-criteria analysis and geospatial techniques

In India, Cyclone is considered as the most catastrophic natural hazard in the eastern coastal states. Multi –criteria analysis (MCA) technique is carried out to describe the effective utilization of geospatial techniques for assessment of impact of cyclone hazard at village level at Bhadrak district of Odisha State. Bhadrak district is severely affected by many cyclones during the period of 1999–2018. Among them Phailin Cyclone in 2013 and Titli Cyclone in the recent year 2018 has been taken to assess the social vulnerability of Bhadrak district. Based on Multi-criteria analysis technique, cyclone hazard map derived from the spatio-multi-temporal satellite data sets like RADARSAT SAR and Sentinel-1A SAR. Using microwave satellite imagery, flood hazard layers are created to show differential social vulnerability of Phailin and Titli cyclone in Bhadrak district. Study reveals that during Phailin cyclone(2013) 32% of areas of Bhadrak district across 82 villages fall under very high risk zone, 125 villages come under high risk zone, 336 villages come under moderate risk zone and 554 villages fall under low risk zone. On the other side during the cyclone Titli (2018) 19% areas were affected and around 64 villages come under very high risk zone, 110 villages fall under high risk zone, 480 villages come under low risk zone and 620 villages are less affected. The present study will be helpful for decision makers to make disaster management plan and mitigation measure to lessen the effect of cyclone in other areas also.
