Abstract

A growing body of evidence over the past two decades suggests that well-designed biomaterials can stimulate the homing of resident stem cells to damaged locations, and orchestrate their activities and functions to facilitate tissue regeneration. To achieve clinical transition and commercial success, regenerative biomaterials scaffold are needed not only to be effective and secure but also cost-effective and convenient for use and distribution. The current review aims to discuss various stem cells and biomaterials with their regenerative potential in different organs. Next, we highlight the current challenges for designing biomaterials and discuss the future directions for biomaterials in regenerative therapies.
