Viburnum genome size variation is associated with multiple polyploidy events but not physiology

image

Genome size may influence several aspects of plant biology, from gene regulation and cell size to physiology and speciation, but do global genome size‐trait relationships always hold up in different evolutionary contexts? Moeglein et al. used genome size estimates, in combination with chromosome counts and a suite of ecophysiological traits, to see how genome size governs trait evolution across the woody angiosperm genus Viburnum. They found a positive relationship between chromosome number and genome size, with multiple polyploidy events driving genome size variation across the group. They also found a positive correlation between genome size and guard cell length, but no relationship between genome size and other anatomical and physiological traits. Their results suggest that many traits correlated with genome size across plants broadly are not constrained by genome size in Viburnum, and that perhaps these broad trends are not always relevant at smaller phylogenetic scales.
