Abstract
Principles of the method of fundamental components that makes it possible to derive heuristic analytical formulas for the problem of diffraction of electromagnetic waves are presented. Mathematically rigorous 2D and 3D solutions of the simplest diffraction problems are used to obtain several fundamental components that are physically interpreted as components of rigorous solutions. A relationship of the 2D and 3D singular diffraction coefficients is presented.
