Decorating Au onto Ni aerogel via a one-step spontaneous gelation preserved the highly porous structure of Ni aerogel, and contributed to more active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity for water oxidation with low overpotential of 377 mV for the current density of 100 mA cm⁻².
