The buckling behavior of single-layer MoS2 sheets with kirigami-inspired structures under compression

Abstract The buckling behavior of single-layer MoS2 sheets under both uniaxial and biaxial compression is studied in the present paper. The critical strain, critical stress, equivalent elastic modulus as well as post-buckling morphologies are comprehensively studied. It is found that both the critical stress and equivalent elastic modulus of SLMoS2 sheets with kirigami-inspired structures are reduced significantly compared with perfect ones. The geometric parameters of kirigami-inspired structures in armchair and zigzag directions have different effects on the compressive behavior of SLMoS2 sheets. SLMoS2 sheets that sustain more strain could be realized by introducing kirigami-inspired structures. What is more, a desired post-bulking morphology can be obtained by properly tuning kirigami-inspired structures. The results should be helpful for various practical and potential applications of the new 2D material.
