Generation of ∼2.0 μm continuous wave laser in a novel Tm:Gd2SrAl2O7 crystal

Tm:Gd2SrAl2O7 (Tm:GSAO) crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. The Raman, absorption and fluorescence spectra of Tm:GSAO crystal were investigated. With a 50 W fiber-coupled laser diode as the pump source, the continuous wave (cw) laser action of Tm:GSAO crystal was demonstrated. The maximum average output power of 3.89 W at ∼1950 nm with a slope efficiency of 53.4% was achieved in a 5-mm-thick a-cut crystal when the output coupler transmittance was 2%. The results show that the Tm:GSAO is a good ∼2.0 μm laser crystal.
