Increasing Power Supply Reliability for Auxiliaries of Subway Traction Substations Using Energy Storage Devices

Abstract

The scheme of an operating subway combined traction substation is considered that indicates auxiliary consumers that require improved power supply. The features of the substation traction units operation and their possible effect on the power supply of essential auxiliary consumers are described. Voltage variations of substation auxiliaries and the recorded case of a short-term ac failure are shown qualitatively and quantitatively. To improve the quality of power supply to essential auxiliary consumers of the combined traction substation, a technical solution based on a hybrid energy storage is proposed. The scheme of a new system for power supply of auxiliaries and the principle of its operation are described. The main nodes of the new system using the existing substation equipment are determined with allowance for the prospective development of energy efficiency and reliability systems based on energy storage devices, as well as their operating modes. A preliminary assessment of the system nodes and possible energy performance indicators is carried out on the basis of the presented experimentally recorded cases of voltage regulation and supply ac failures.
