Monte Carlo Simulation of the Waste Soda-Lime-Silica Glass System Contained Sb2O3 for Gamma-ray Shielding

Gamma radiations have destructive effects on persons who exposed to them and can cause damaging the healthy tissues. Therefore, shielding materials are necessary for protecting them. For this purpose, attenuation characteristics of the S-type glass namely, Soda-Lime-Silica glass which is doped with Sb2O3 were obtained by the MCNPX code and the results were compared to the XCOM software findings. The results of the attenuation parameters for 4 types of glass materials namely, SLS (no addition of Sb2O3), SLSS1 (0.005 % Sb2O3), SLSS2 (0.05 % Sb2O3), SLSS3 (0.5% Sb2O3) show that by increasing the energy levels, the linear attenuation coefficient decreases. For lower energy, the µ has a sharp decrease, but the curve’s behavior is stable in higher energy. The XCOM calculations were done for a wide range of energies between 1 to 1e8 keV. Moreover, it is observed that the variations of the compositions’ rates which lead to changes in the density of the glass system can affect the linear attenuation coefficients. Based on obtained results of the linear attenuation coefficients, other parameters of the glass system such as HVL (Half Value Layer) and TVL (Tenth Value Layer) for the energies of 662, 1173, and 1332 keV were calculated. Additionally, the results also show that, by increasing the Sb2O3 contents, the thickness of the glass decreases.
