A novel Eu2+-activated calcium zirconium silicate phosphor: Ca3ZrSi2O9:Eu2+

Abstract Eu2+-activated Ca3ZrSi2O9 (Ca3ZrSi2O9:Eu2+) phosphors were successfully synthesized by an amorphous metal complex method with the use of propylene glycol-modified silane. We studied the photoluminescence and crystallographic properties of Ca3ZrSi2O9:Eu2+ as a function of total Eu content (x) in Ca3−xEuxZrSi2O9. The Ca3ZrSi2O9:Eu2+ samples with low Eu2+ contents (x = 0.003–0.030) had a green emission peak at 520 nm. However, when the Eu2+ content (x) was increased to 0.300, Ca3ZrSi2O9:Eu2+ had a red emission peak at 640 nm and the green emission disappeared. The resulting red emission is mainly attributed to Eu2+ occupying different crystallographic sites of the Ca-O polyhedra of the Ca3ZrSi2O9 lattice.
