Evaluation of fluazaindolizine, a new nematicide for management of Meloidogyne incognita in squash in calcareous soils

Abstract: The southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) is one of the major problems affecting squash production in Florida and worldwide. Calcareous soils exist in south Florida, and squash in Miami-Dade County is grown in this type of soil. Environmentally friendly and low-toxic non-fumigant nematicides for managing M. incognita are urgently needed. Fluazaindolizine is a new compound that has been evaluated on vegetable crops and proven to be a highly effective non-fumigant nematicide. However, its efficacy against M. incognita in squash and its effect on squash fruit yield in calcareous soils are not documented. Field trials were conducted in 2019 and 2020 to evaluate the effect of fluazaindolizine on root galling and populations of M. incognita in the soil, plant vigor, and fruit yield of squash grown in calcareous soils in south Florida.
