ABSTRACT

The newly proposed structural system (TRAROM), made of timber posts, beams, internal diagonals and planks laid on orthogonal directions on both sides of the wall, is influenced by the architecture of traditional timber houses in Romania. Walls with different layouts were tested to in-plane static cyclic loading in order to obtain the best one, focusing on anti-seismic features, the ease of manufacture, and economic requirements imposed by current living standards. The connections between the timber elements were chosen to be as simple as possible, due to the lack of skilled carpenters in Romania. Screw nails were used for all connections and, depending on the position in the layout of the wall (post-to-beam, plank-to-post, etc.), the diameter and length were different. Within the experimental program, the behavior of the connections was observed, first in the overall behavior of the wall, and later compared to pull-out and bending tests on all types of connections involved. The results are compared with previous traditional “paianta” walls (timber frames with mud masonry infill) and connection tests (cross-halved and mortise-tenon).
