Geochemical characteristics and sources of Chang 8 crude oil from Xiaoxian area, Southwest margin of the Ordos Basin, China

ABSTRACT

In recent years, a certain scale Chang 8 reservoirs has been discovered in the Xiaoxian area, on which little research has been done. Therefore, further geochemical characteristics and sources of crude oil need to be explored. By using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method, it is concluded that the geochemical characteristics of Chang 8 crude oil are contrary to local Chang 7 source rocks. Under such circumstances, comparing the relative content of 17α(H)-C30 diahopane (C30*/C30 hopane) with the Chang 7 hydrocarbon generating center near the study area, it is found that Chang 8 crude oil was more likely to come from the Qingyang-Xifeng area.
