Metastable metallic phases of two‐dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanomaterials have attracted great research interest and promoted the applications of sustainable energy storage and conversion sources. These TMD‐based nanomaterials exhibit an excellent electrochemical performance because of their abundant active sites and extraordinary physicochemical properties. This review provides deep insights into recent progress and highlights key challenges for defect engineering in the metastable phases of TMDs.
