Abstract This commentary summarizes themes in a special issue published in the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology on political development. Papers range in method and disciplinary lens, offering unique insight on diverse youth's political development, and the role that diverse contexts play in shaping these processes. Building on a tradition of youth development research that challenges deficit frameworks, this issue highlights the ways in which diverse youth are not passive recipients of oppressive structures, and in fact, engage with and respond politically to these sources of marginalization in their everyday lives. Such an examination is critical given the systemic and pervasive ways societal ills may affect diverse youth's engagement in U.S. society and the political process. The ways in which an intersectionality lens might aid the future of research on political development among diverse youth are discussed.
