Synthesis of YAlO3 up-conversion powder using a co-precipitation technique

Yttrium aluminum perovskite (YAP), or YAlO3, shows promising potential as an up-conversion (UC) host material due to its excellent fluorescence properties and relatively lower phonon energy as compared to those of the other complex-oxide host materials. Herein, YAlO3 was synthesized using the convenient co-precipitation technique, and single-phase YAP powder was successfully developed; it was characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. We found that the hexagonal and orthorhombic single-phase YAPs were crystallized at 950 C and 1200 C, respectively. Additionally, Er3+(1, 5, 10at%)-doped orthorhombic YAP powders were similarly synthesized to study their fluorescent properties; they exhibited a fluorescence spectrum due to the 4I13/2 to 4I15/2 energy transition, and green and red UC spectra due to the (2H11/2, 4S3/2) to 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 to 4I15/2 energy transitions, respectively. We believe that these findings will be highly effective in the fabrication of various efficient RE3+:YAP UC phosphors.
