ABSTRACT Cyclic bis(diironhexacarbonyl) dithiolates with double-butterfly architecture and centrosymmetricity are supramolecular coordination complexes that mimic the structure and function of the diiron unit in the H-cluster of [FeFe]-hydrogenase. These ferracycles are an important and interesting class of biomimetic iron-carbonyl complexes related to [FeFe]-hydrogenase that have received less attention. This review focuses on the synthetic approaches employed for the formation of the metallo-macrocycles, structural and electronic properties of the macromolecules and influence of bridging ligands, and some aspects of their reactivity.
