Black TiO2/cobalt ferrite nanoparticle supported on diatomaceous earth as magnetically recyclable sonocatalyst for ibuprofen removal

This study reports a facile preparation of TiO2-x/CoFe2O4 (black Ti3+ self-doped titania coupled with cobalt ferrite), an efficient sonocatalyst for ibuprofen (IBP) mitigation. Compared with TiO2-x or CoFe2O4, TiO2-x/CoFe2O4 heterojunction displayed enhanced sono-oxidation performance, and their immobilization onto diatomaceous earth (DE) further increased the oxidation rate. The effects of various parameters on sono-oxidation efficiency were studied, such as pH, IBP concentration, catalyst dosage, co-existing microplastics and chemicals, ultrasonic power and frequency, introduction of persulfate. About 96.0% of 10 mg/L IBP was removed in 100 min using 0.7 g/L catalyst at pH=6, with the ultrasonic power of 144 W and frequency of 60 KHz. Quenching experiment results demonstrated the roles of reactive species. The intermediates during IBP sono-oxidation were determined by HLPC-MS method, and the acute toxicity was studied. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was proposed. The sonocatalyst revealed excellent reusability, suggesting itself promising for wastewater treatment.
