Long-term Dynamics of Vegetation Restoration in the Technogenic Landscapes of the Bylym Arid Depression (Central Caucasus)

Abstract

The main trends in the dynamics of vegetation restoration on unevenly aged terraces of the Tyrnyauz Combine tailings dam in the conditions of the Bylym Arid Depression over a 50-year period are revealed. The steppe meadow regenerates on young upper terraces for 20 years. The slowest process is the self-growth of old-growth terraces at the dam foot (50 years). Conversely, the processes of soil formation are more intensive on the lower terraces. The phytocenogenetic process has not yet been completed at the tailings dam to date. It is predicted that subalpine steppe meadows will form on dark humus soils on the dam embankment exposed to low anthropogenic pressure.
