Features of the Sorption of Rhodium(III) from Chloride Solutions on an Ion Exchange Resin with Thiouronium Functional Groups

Abstract

Sorption of rhodium(III) was investigated on complexing ion exchange resins Purolite S914 with thiouronium, Purolite S920 with isothiouronium, Purolite S924 with thiol functional groups, and Purolite S924/K containing both thiol and carboxyl groups (hereinafter S914, S920, S924, and S924/K, respectively) from 4 M solutions of hydrochloric acid which were previously kept either at room temperature or at a temperature of ~80°C in the presence of (g L–1): Fe(III) 6.0, Al(III) 4.2, Zn(II) 5.2, Sn(IV) 4.1, and Ce(III) 2.0. It was found that the S914 and S920 resins significantly exceed the S924 and S924/K in terms of their ability to adsorb rhodium(III), therewith preliminary holding of the solutions at a temperature of ~80°С leads to an increase in the capacity of these resins for rhodium(III) and an increase in the rate of rhodium(III) sorption on S914 resin. The rate of sorption of rhodium(III) on the S914 resin, regardless of the method of preliminary preparation of solutions at room temperature, is low and noticeably increases with a rise in the sorption temperature to 60°C. The possibility of deep extraction of rhodium(III) (up to 99%) from multicomponent chloride solutions preliminarily kept at a temperature of ~80°C on the S914 resin with thiouronium functional groups under dynamic and static conditions at 56°C has been shown.
