Improved gamma radiation shielding traits of epoxy composites: Evaluation of mass attenuation coefficient, effective atomic and electron number

Abstract To protect the human from the γ–radiation hazard, the novel shielding materials are ever-demanding in the field of nuclear medicine. In this research, we assessed the mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ), mean atomic number ( ), effective atomic cross-section (σa), atomic number (Zeff) plus electron number (Neff) of the pure epoxy, Al2O3-epoxy (6 and 15 wt%) and Fe2O3-epoxy/(6 and 15 wt%) exposed to various energies of γ-rays (0.662, 1.173 and 1.333 MeV). The NaI detector was used for the gamma rays detection. The experimental results revealed good agreement with the theoretical values obtained using the WinXCOM program. The μ/ρ values showed inverse correlation whereas Zeff and Neff revealed direct correlation in the studied γ-ray energy range. The proposed epoxy nanocomposites are established to be useful for the development of improved γ–radiation shielding.
