Shelf life of insects is not among the life-history traits considered from a fundamental research perspective, but is an important facet of fitness in applied insect science. Temperature is known to strongly affect almost all aspects of insect development, as well as storage duration. Rezaei and colleagues investigate cold storage sensitivity of the parasitoid wasp Aphidius matricariae Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a commercial biocontrol agent of dozens of aphid species. Parasitoid fitness remained unaffected by storage at 5 °C for up to 15 days. Determining efficient storage conditions of biocontrol agents is important for the planning of mass rearing and mass release in augmentative biological control programs.
