The immune system and the nervous system are complex, but their crucial roles in many aspects of normal physiology and in disease pathogenesis mean that each has been extensively studied and characterized. The rather fixed architecture of the nervous system contrasts to the roaming, flexible nature of the immune system, but both make specific responses to various stimuli and feature, in different ways, a capacity for memory. Notably, studies in the past decade have discovered extensive bidirectional interactions between the two systems that operate in a wide range of responses in health and disease, offering a hope of novel therapeutic approaches for immunological and neurological disorders. This Special Issue, which includes four review articles and one research article, demonstrates several aspects of how the two systems are inter-connected.
