Creation of Textured Surfaces by Electrical Discharge Machining

Abstract The applicability of electrical discharge machining (EDM) in creating textured surfaces is investigated. Recommendations are made regarding the use of selective laser melting to create complex tool electrodes. The theoretical basis is established for the creation of textured working surfaces, so as to produce a hydrophobic material capable of oil storage, with consequent decrease in friction and increase in wear and corrosion resistance. In that case, the properties of the material are retained or improved on account of decrease in grain size. The textured material produced may also be used to obstruct the motion of structural elements.
