A simple experiment to model speed bumps and humps

The effects of speed humps and bumps in slowing vehicles were investigated using a mass suspended on a spring. An impulse was applied to the mass by lowering and raising the top end of the spring by hand. The impulse duration was varied to simulate different driving speeds, and the displacement of the mass vs time was recorded with a video camera. Maximum displacement of the mass was observed when the impulse duration was about equal to the vibration period of the mass–spring system, consistent with a simple model of the system. The additional effect of a shock absorber is also examined. The experiment could be undertaken in a student laboratory or used as a lecture demonstration to gain deeper insights into impulsive forces and the behaviour of mass–spring systems.
