Although formally described only in 2001 (Werres et al., 2001), the oomycete plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum has emerged as one of the most interesting model organisms of our times in the field of plant pathology (Garbelotto and Hayden, 2012; Grünwald et al., 2019; Rizzo et al., 2005). The interest around P. ramorum stems from a variety of reasons. First, it is an incredibly destructive forest pathogen in world regions where it has been introduced (Brasier and Webber, 2010; Rizzo and Garbelotto, 2003; Rizzo et al., 2002).
