Multistable mechanical metamaterials with highly tunable strength and energy absorption performance

Abstract

A novel multistable mechanical metamaterial showing highly tunable strength and energy absorption performance has been designed in this paper. A theoretical model is established to describe mechanical properties of the unit cell. The specimens of unit cells and metamaterials have been fabricated by fused deposition modeling additive manufacturing technology. Quasi-static compression and tensile experiments and the corresponding simulation analyses on these specimens are carried out. Results obtained from experiment and simulation methods demonstrate that mechanical properties of the presented bistable unit cell and multistable metamaterial can be tunable in a wide range with little change in total mass.
