Ammonium nitrate serves a unique spot in society. It can generate non‐toxic, non‐carbonaeous gases; it can provide nitrogen in the form of nitrate which can be quickly taken up by growing plants; and it can be formulated into a low brisant explosive. On the flip‐side, ammonium nitrate is subject to decomposition by heat, humidity and acidicity; and its widespread availability make it a tempting ingredient for terrorists.
