Effect of Heat Treatment on Wear Behavior of A357/Cenosphere Composites

The present paper is based on the effect of heat treatment on the wear behavior of A357/cenosphere composites. The aluminum metal matrix composites were fabricated by the squeeze casting method. Both base alloy and composites are heat treated. The hardness of the matrix alloy and composites, both in as cast and heat-treated conditions, is measured by Vickers microhardness tester. The mechanical properties of the Al alloy/cenosphere composites got enhanced due to dispersion hardening, grain boundary strengthening and Orowan strengthening. The abrasive wear behavior was carried out on the composites using pin-on-disk wear tester with various operating parameters. The wear test results showed that the matrix alloy suffered higher wear rate than that of composites both in untreated and heat-treated conditions, depending on load.
