Abstract In this second research report (i.e., Part II), an ionic liquid (IL)-bonded silica column having an anion-exchange characteristic is described and characterized chromatographically with test acidic solute probes and by physical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The IL anion-exchange stationary phase consists of a short alkyl chain IL stationary phase that has been synthesized by covalently immobilizing 1-ethylimidazole on a silica substrate through chloropropyltrimethoxysilane tether. The retention characteristics of the resulting stationary phase have been examined with acidic solutes such as aromatic acid derivatives and nucleotides. The test results show good resolution and separation efficiency indicating the presence of different interaction mechanisms such as π–π, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions to a certain extent.
