Some electrophysical parameters of novel clay- and corundum-containing composites based on ferroelectric ceramics

Abstract A comparative study on a set of electrophysical parameters of novel piezo-active composites is carried out. These composites are based on ferroelectric ZTS-36 ceramic of the PZT type. The second (piezo-passive) component is either clay or corundum ceramic, and its volume fraction mc is varied from 0.01 to 0.10 (clay) or from 0.01 to 0.12 (corundum). The studied composites are characterised by elements of 3–0 connectivity patterns that include not only the aforementioned components but also air pores. Experimental volume-fraction (mc) dependences of the piezoelectric coefficients and (j = 1 and 3), their anisotropy ζd* = / mechanical quality factor and planar electromechanical coupling factor are compared for the clay- and corundum-containing composites. The corundum-containing composite exhibits large values (up to 858) at |ζd*| < 3.2, and the clay-containing composite is characterised by relatively large values (about 50–60 mV m/N) at |ζd*| < 4.9. The experimental volume-fraction dependences of ζd*, and are interpreted within the framework of a model of a 3–0-type composite with spheroidal inclusions (piezo-passive component and pores). Agreement between our modelling results and experimental values of the electrophysical parameters is observed in the studied mc range.
